The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 三星半。以成就居其次的大威作为关注高光并以其生涯首站巡回赛的“失败”做结，足以窥探剧本原貌的可贵；相比其他蜻蜓点水类的在世人物正面传记，影片对理查在暴君与慈父双面的平衡处理恰如其分，也为威尔·史密斯逐梦奥斯卡做足铺垫。一切无趣的商业传记内容，都足以被专业度无以复加的网球戏份弥补，青少年演员对大威从神态到动作的还原值得赞叹。
仍是每年颁奖季都有的人物传记片，完全以主角为中心，表演尚可，质量平平。
拍得其實不錯，但逃避描繪父親這個角色真正的缺點令到電影呈現出了尷尬的狀態，成功學和父權色彩令體育和種族的動人豪情瞬間褪色不少。
节奏控制不错，剧本同样扎实，放十年前属于典型的冲奥片。要的是一点尊重，以及出人头地。★★★☆/7.2
Cameriamge 2021// 很好的片子 很小资 是那种好的美国片子 并不是很有野心 但非常sweet 摄影风格我一直以为是hoyte的 结果看到最后才发现是Robbie Ryan 但非常漂亮的影像 自然主义 非常柔的光但却又不失反差 时常使用中全大全等景别还拍的好实在很难得 毕竟表现人和城市在影像上是个很大的主题
处理得比较收。对运动题材电影我其实不能算懂行。对于这个父亲的教育方式，以及他对小孩的“不能文盲、不要burn out”的保护，确实有些叹为观止。而且他竟然还做到了。也就是因为做到了才得以拍成电影吧;)
NYFF59 #6 电影节的最后一天，我的最后一部。超出任何预期的好，我也和大家一样在偷偷抹眼泪。平滑的叙事和黑白的城市风景，柔和的青少年人像摄影和采访、生活蒙太奇等等。我不明白是否是黑白电影的缘故所以让纽约变得平易近人了，或者说更像真实的情感可以贴近的纽约（让我想起弗兰西斯哈的黑白映像），碎碎念一通不知道在说什么…总而言之这真的是很好的一部电影！
大威小威这么伟大的球员居然沦为工具人，在电影中毫无存在感，重点全是她们的爸爸，仿佛一切功劳全是这个爸爸的。为什么不拍各个世界名人的妈妈？他们是没妈妈吗？？？？？？？？？？？
看了很多年的网球比赛。培养一个天才网球选手，父母是功不可没的。
更偏反映黑人日常生活遭遇 自己努力还得有人这么努力的支持你。不说他对不对 只说这种家庭的付出跟做到和信念就比不了。
中规中矩的八序列法剧本，威尔史密斯影帝锁了吧，导演的功底很一般。

很明显这是一部有点反鸡汤的美国主旋律励志电影。跟摔跤吧爸爸相同，但又没完全想同。主要描述这个偏执的父亲，节奏出大问题，感觉整体没有叙事重心，而且每一幕都强调种族歧视真的很无趣，网球比赛不是重点场面设计不好就算了，对于父亲这个人物仅仅用一段对白表达是不是有点弱了。成功了他可能是天才，但没成功他就是个耽误孩子的偏执自大狂罢了。最后，威尔史密斯和其她演员真的很还原，看着是奔奥斯卡来的…
【2.0】我不反感规矩传统的传记片讲法，但我抵触过度粉饰的传记片主人公，威尔·史密斯饰演的父亲是我所不相信的。这个角色的塑造太过狡猾，影片并不回避他的过错和负面情绪，但这些时刻的归因均被编剧施以了爱的绑架，这个角色的定位始终是作为父亲和丈夫的顶天立地的男人，唯独没有去掉标签的那个真正属于他自己的时刻。

威尔史密斯演得确实很好，从步态，身段，眼神等各方面都完美演绎了原型人物，应该能获得奥斯卡提名，但我还是认为本尼迪克特康伯巴奇才应该获得影帝。
也真的是受够了这套《摔跤吧爸爸》励志鸡汤成功学了。还不如干脆拍成第一名赢得比赛更加胜利得了。冗长乏味又"黑"又正确又打鸡血的电影怎么都看不腻的。快点把影D给史皇吧，我真的害怕他在传记电影里过度自我陶醉出不来，我真的受够鸡汤教育了。
