The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 看到这女的就能猜到她肯定是凶犯，男主替她背锅的……天灾无可避免，人祸呢！！！
很像阿甘正传的设定，剧情跳脱的厉害，不过整体还挺有意思的电影。
在3星和4星中摇摆，导演是减分项，赞美果耶！！！！

电影探讨的问题很现实，很发人深省，演员也演得很好，只是节奏上显得拖沓。
一个关于离别与生死的故事，荒诞又现实，那些离奇的片段把故事从真实中抽离，最后又重重地砸回现实。影片节奏匆忙而又平均，絮絮叨叨的像部流水账，却也展现了人生真正的样子。所以还是多折腾折腾吧，为人生多留下些痕迹，还是那句话，人生若无悔，那该多无趣啊。
三星半，这么低的分，不喜欢的人应该是觉得太扯太荒诞太文艺腔了，比起爱情片更像是一部思考生命意义的狂想曲(虽然这么说太俗了)，所以后半部才是不老奇事也只是男主的幻想而已，并不是科幻。王朔这么多年了还是在表达“成功不就是挣点钱让傻逼们知道吗” ，不过这样的“烂片”比那些庸俗的烂片可强多了
对原著的改动太大了，单纯靠演员的卖力演出和台词的铺陈，无法将如此沉重的议题完全地展示给观众，也导致了整部电影的深度欠奉。电影里那些疯狂的情绪渲染，虽然带来了一定的震撼，却始终无法将原著抨击社会制度说清楚，同时，也缺乏了对戏中官僚们为何一定要“照章办事”的原因探究。而最后那浮于表面的动机以及道歉，再次令人感受到在资本面前，影视作品无法真真正正去揭穿那些本质的、更深层次的、更骇人、更教人无奈的“疾病”。最后的最后，给了4星，是因为中山七里。

今时今日，看到这样一部电影，真当过于合适了。一个良性社会，是要为最卑微的人强势托底，让他们别活活饿死在家中，拥有体面的生存方式，仅此而已。

因为日本的罪案题材基本没有太容易抓获的凶手，所以很早就猜到真凶是谁。从这一点上来讲，这个故事并不成功。
